Kajiado linda punda ushinde competition awarding ceremony briefing

The event was held on 7th September, 2017 at KCB Grounds in Kajiado County. It was graced by approximately 300 participants whom included representatives from 25 donkey welfare groups from across the County, various government ministries from the County (Agriculture, livestock & fisheries; Trade & Co-operatives; Gender & Social service), County commissioner, County administration officers, County director of veterinary services, Kenya veterinary Board, Kenya veterinary association and Brooke EA. One mainstream TV station, 2 local radio stations a print media covered the event.

The ceremony emphasized on donkey protection, laws on animal welfare, clean up exercise within the town in collaboration with NEMA with an aim to sensitize the donkey owners and the public on the link between donkey welfare and clean environment. Demonstrations on donkey handling practices, harnessing techniques and the donkeys present benefitted from deworming services administered by the local service providers.

 

Winner Prize 1: Orata Self Help Group:

This is a youth group comprising 31 members, owning 34 donkeys. Donkeys will be labelled with a common group symbol, explore and where possible install tracking devices similar to the ones fit on the security dogs. Start a small business (car wash) for the members to boost their savings for purchase of a plot of land for construction of a permanent perimeter wall plot saving them the hiring of ground charge working closely with local administration.

Winner Prize 3: Oloolerah Osotua Ng’ejuk Women Group

The group comprises of 18 women owning 36 donkeys. Their idea is on construction of  donkey shades, hire herders to making sure donkey are kept together with other livestock at night, fitting some donkeys with  neck bells to alert owners in case of night disturbances by thieves.

A meeting was proposed on 15th September 2017 with 3 officials from each of the winning group to receive the cheques as we discuss project implementation, monitoring, accounting and reporting. The Chair of the panel and the Ministry of Gender and Social Services will be represented in the meeting.
